Lesson 5 Google Docs

Think

When I join in a group work, I usually books a meeting room in the library or use e-mail.

The problems of this procedure is that we do not have common time for the meeting at the most of times and that e-mail is one-way communiation and takes too much time to really understand what the other want to tell.

Also, someone who become a leader have to spare much time to achieving shared understandings among the team members.

Explore

1.
It is useful that Google Document are open to two kind of people;
Collaborator: People who are allowed to edit the documents.
visitor: People who are allowed not to edit the documents, but allowed to subscribe.
This means we can edit and publish all Docs in one page!!

2.
Every single version of document is stored.
Sometime too many people join in one document and we get confused due to the uncountable numbers of editing. Also, we are not sure who edited where, who was good and who was not.
However, Google Docs stores every single version of document.
That means every person can check the each version of the document and everyone knows who edited where.

3.
Anytime, anywhere, we are allowed to work on them.
We know that meeting room would be closed on 20:00 and there's no other suitable place to do group work near ICU.
Google Document enabled us to participate in group works sitting on the chair in our room or taking coffee in Starbucks.

1. What are the main skills needed to use GDS?

I came to think it is necessary for making the most out of GDS to understand the system which has Google account-centered functions.

Posessing Google account enables us to use several sites and functions such as Google Docs, Blogger and G-mail, which are only opened to Google customers.

However, we hardly know what kind of the functions they provide us and how they are connected to each other. As we did in this lesson, we can send our post which was made with Google Doc straight from Google Docs to Blogger. If we already know this simple connection between two sites in advance, we can receive greater profit, which reduces our time in greater amount.

Also, knowledge in file version is the requirement for GDS users. GDS used not to accepted docx. version of file before(it was solved a week ago and yes, we can upload docx. file without saving into 2000-2003 version of doc. file now!!) .

2. What are the affordances of GDS (what does it make possible, what does it impede)?

GDS allows us to upload files online. This means anyone can have access to the file at anytime, anywhere. This enables us to work on the group work from anywhere connected to the web.

However, PDF files uploaded to the GDS are only opened to people who have Google account, in contrast to the fact that Document and Spreadsheet version of files on the GDS are opened to all web users.

Considering that word files are mis-converted to Google Document often, PDF file is best way to upload the original version of files as they were. This has to be improved.

3. How can GDS be used to network professionally and connect you (& other students) to learning resources?

As I wrote above, GDS support us to work on the group works. This can be translated in another way that GDS is a nice tool for doing one project with many people.

With on occasion that each of members has a Google account and joins to one group (on Google), they can edit the documents on the GDS at anytime from anywhere.

In addition, you can upload essays and articles you wrote before on the GDS. If you put the tag to the e-mail you send or just put that to facebook, myspace or mixi, you can share them with the person you want to to share with easily without having struggle to print and send them by mail.

4. What skills and understandings have you learned about GDS that may promote your development as an effective learner in the digital age?

I can do almost every academic work online now!!

GDS have alternatives to Word, Excel and powerpoint and they stores files online. I have never come up with the thought that I can do academic work from any computer because I do not usually keep USB in my pocket which stores my digital version of works. With GDS, I only have to log in to my account and open GDS.

Lesson 4: Delicious as a Personal & Social Study Tool

Think

1.
a) 5 years ago: less than 20 %
I had not got my own personal computer , although my family had one for all of us at that time. I researched on hobby stuff such as movies, books and music on the web.

b) 2 years ago: up to 95 %
I already had got my own PC and I started working at a private clam school as instructor. I had not got much time to research stuff in the library or other other researhing place. So I did most of research on the web.

c) Now: 80 %
I live in the dorm and there is always someone specialized in each topic such as computing, travel, studying stuff and having fun. I spend less on the web than before.

2. I bookmark that site on the browser. or I write it down in case some troble on the computer happens

3. We use email and attach the adress to the sites or I can upload the adress on my Facebook and mixi pages and other social networking sites.

Do
There are mainly three things I learned in the video;

1. I learned I should name my account something reflecting my personality at several place such and office. Also If we are paying attention to security problems, we should not use kerberos password for Delicious(However, Now I'm using kerberos password for Delicious. Is it okay?)

2.We can put tag not only words but also other specific users and group. With tagging, we can send site address to each one of person or group who was tagged. They can choose save or not save.

3. I did not know that we can search sites with entering only "keywords" but also we can use the account name and group name. These are very useful when these group are categorized by their interests and speciality. In the case of Google searching, sometimes "keywords" brings with nothing but only meaningless information which we do not need because Google search collect and apply "all" the information on the web. In this case, it is troublesome and takes a lot of time to search information which we pursue. In contrast, Delicious enables us to remove useless information from someone we do not know and refer to the information of someone we know well and can rely on.

Explore
17. I added accounts of Eriko, Natsumi, Nagisa and Masa to my network.

Explain

1. How to name tag and how to find suitable tag for what you want to search are the most important skills. As Same thing can be applied to other searching engine such as Google and yahoo, Delicious demand its user to learn technique in searching with combination of word.
There are uncountable numbers of combination of word and users are supposed to choose most suitable pair or group of them. Unless, only there will be poor answer for the searching.

2.
Now I added some of my classmate from this course and I know who they are and what their interested in. For example, since I know Nagisa is in a model UN(my roommate, too!) and I think she's interested in international situation, I can tag her the news sites and blogs on international situation I found on the web and I can use her bookmarking for my researchng on that kind of stuff in return. Although I have not added much people in my network on Delicious, I can added them in the future.

3.By joining groups, we can find others who have same interests as us. Since the groups are beyond borders with the standing feature of the internet, we are provided with a great amount of information on what we prefer. If we want to narrow the range of information, we have only to add new keywords or people tag to the searching enegine.
Also, when we are doing groupworks, this social bookmarking function will lead us to a big success. We can make new group and bookmark the sites we find on the research for the presentaion. That help us when you want to know what information others are based on.

4. I learned and felt "sharing" is the keyword for this lesson.
It is less time-consuming to sharing the sites' adrress online and that we do not have to meet people in the face in order only to pass them the information you have. However, it is dangerous at the same time to share the information with others(this is same case as Social Networking) because Delicious enables us to be connected to whom we have not met and, in addition, give them the information that might be enough to identify us. Though I am not sure how much people are using real name and fake name for Delicious, there always be danger. We should have enough consideration when I add and make account for the sites on the web. In short, we have to be aware of the risk and danger.

Homework class 9 & 10

1.The main elements or factors critical to Paul' successfully spreading the Christian message is that he used the most powerful networks of those time. Although he abolished some of the rules to be a christian and that had a certain litlle effect on people, his walking through the most biggest groups at that time and spreading its story was the most effective.

2.Even on the recent condition of the world, something like incident on christianity at the early 1c could happen again. For example, most of people in the world are now inclined to believe capitalism is right or have good effect on people. Since we saw the fall of soviet union and the prosperity of the U.S through the media such as TV and newspaper and magazines on which we relied most at that time, we believe that capitalism is some how "good".
TV and newspapers must have more effect on people ways of thinking because, at that time people were nervous at the situation of the world, more people must read papers and sow TV to understand what going on within the world than it is now. That can be one of the way how network works.

3. A new kind of maps that have been made of our interconnectivity is reflected on the national and other budget. For example, the administration measures how many people go to hospital and how much treatment we have got. Next, they make a trial calculation of the future health insurance income and payment. All that procedure has terms with our interconnectivity between medicine and us.
I, on personal occasion, would like to see maps on scholarship and the educational success(widely, the relationship between "money" and "education"). That is the reason I originaly went to education faculty at former university.

4. That these maps has the same structure as whole is the "real surprise" that these maps has revealed. I am not that surprised because I am now taking Game theory class and that is applied to a number of teritory of study. It originated in mathematical discovery, however now it is now teached in the economics classses and applied in the politics studies and affect decision made in the war.

5.Author defines the nature of most scientific reserch in the 20th century as study which lay more emphasis on individual part than the whole system. The problem of this attitude turned out to be that even each components has studid enough and understood, we are still not sure how it works in the "system". Although it was first purpose of scientists to understand the whole system such as Universe, they did not find the clue to understand the inter effects between each compunents.

6.Barabasi predict that the scientific reserch will focus on the spreading networks because it will be more dominant in the future. I agree with that prediction on the reason that it is now the most important work to undertake marketing research in the most companies and the marketing research is absolutely one of the applications of the network studies. In the Capitalism world, where money gathers will gather intellectuality naturally. If a big company with lots of capital tried to survey the spending power of comsumers, it will pay enomous amount of money to a think tank. Now that the world is connected universaly and each company, government, and person came to be unabled to grasp the connection between each of them, they would not hesitate to support the scientists to reserch into networks.

Lesson 3: Blog as e-Portfolio

ID: 121566

Name: Tanaka Keita

Before you began this course, how would you show others (and yourself) evidence of what you know and what you can do?

Written version of essays and resumes were the most used evidences of what we do and what we can. I wrote some resume for the selection of scholarships last week and it took several hours to complete. In addition, we use certifications for English skills, such as TOEIC, TOEFL and IELTS as other way to show the evidences for our skills.

Explore

1. Do you need an e-portfolio? Please watch this presentation (24/31). In your own words, briefly explain what you understand an e-portfolio is.

We should spent enough time to make our own e-portfolio, because e-portfolio has several functions that help us. The functions will be explained as the video is comprehended.
First, the original word "portfolio" means collection of work you have done and what you learned and it is used when people apply for colleges and jobs. Portfolio is one of the tool to connect us to others who might leads to our next career plans. Also portfolio enables us to remember what we have done in the past and helps us to make next decisions.
Second, having an e-portfolio is much useful than only having an written version of one, because it less likely to be lost and is much easier to edit for different readers. In addition, e-portfolio is better in the sense of accessibility because people can access to e-portfolio from anywhere, anytime if they are online.

2. What content may you want to add to your e-portfolio? Think about content that will tell important things about what you know and what you can do, that you would like others to learn about you. Please make a list of your ideas.

Following the P.E.A.K.S methods in the video, I will add these following information at first

1. Personal Characteristics
  • Good listener.
  • Sensible and clear determination
↑I will ask someone around me to write recommendation letters or videos.

2. Experience
  • 1year as a class[2~20 per a class] instructor[English, Japanese, Social Sciences and Mathematics] for elementary~high school student at "Syugaku- zemina-ru", a cram school in Yokohama.
  • a half year as an editor for the free paper "kyaria-Baito[Career-part time jobs]"
  • 1year member of "寮運営協議委員会[Dorm steering Comittie]" at International Christian University
↑I will put up links to our blog of the paper and upload PDF version of my article.
3. Accomplishment
  • Awarded as "most diligent instructor" 2006 summer classes at the cram school
  • Awarded 3rd place[Kyaria-Baito] at 2008 3rd All Japan Student Free paper competition
↑I will put up a link to the competition blog

4. Knowledge
  • Well versed in modern Japanese literature[Yamamoto fumio, Okuda Hideo]
5. Skills
  • Attending French and Arabic class
  • Book review in papers and mail magazines
↑I will upload some of my works of book reviewing and introduce myself in French and Arabic.
Above all, so far.

3. What do you see as some of the main advantages or disadvantages in having an e-portfolio in addition to (or in place of) a traditional resume? To inform your answer, please compare and contrast the resumes below to some of the e-portfolios.

Comparing #2 resume[Athletics trainer] and #5 e-portfolio[University Student], One of the biggest differences is the amount of information. Resume contains only outstanding and specific experience and award. It is concise and accurate, but we are not sure what kind of characteristics he have and what he did in each accomplishment. In contrast, in e-portfolio, the way of writings and the taste of the word in the sentence of writer are easily recognized and we get more interested in her/his own personality. However, this e-portfolio is a little bit wordy and difficult to find where is important.

Explain

1. What are the main skills needed to use your e-Portfolio?

The most important skills needed to use an e-portfolio is the
diligence and creativity.
Although most people might say that the most important is the knowledge in computing and web things,I learned in the Do part of this lesson that these knowledge can be learned a little by little if people keep on trying.
Also, there should be a plan first and the procedure is the second thing. We have to investigate what the viewer want and what we want to show. After that is confirmed, we decide what kind of web technology
we use for the e-portfolio.

2. What are the affordances of your e-Portfolio (what does it make possible, what does it impede)?

Now, My e-portfolio is connected to "Google document" in some parts.
Some of the Essays and reports I wrote in the last two semester are uploaded to my Google document folder [which is online] and I put addresses for each document.Visitors can see my works by clicking the addresses.

Also, I put links to my "Facebook" page and my free paper team blog in order to show visitors what kind of projects I am working on and what kind of person I am.

However, there are some problem,

1. Google document do not accept docx. files;
I use Windows Vista now, so I change word version of files into PDF files and am uploading online. It takes time a little bit.

2. I cannot find the way to upload my works on Information technology class;
I made some web pages[easy ones] during last semester for the computing class , but I do not know how to upload that. I tried w3 server, but it is only for ICU student, so it is not appropriate for the e-portfolio server. Anyway, I am working on this now.

3. How can your e-Portfolio be used to network professionally and connect you (& other students) to learning resources?

As a thinkable option, we can put our e-portfolio addresses on signature section of our e-mail system such as Yamata, hotmail and gmail. That procedure enables the mail receivers to check senders[us]
identifications easily and hopefully reduces our time to introduce ourselves when we send e-mails to people for the first time.
There is another way to use our e-portfolio in order to connect ourselves to leaning resources. In my case, my e-portfolio is connected to Google document and there will be uploaded my essays, report and other works. That means I can easily read them again for the future studies without searching for them in the computer and other stocks as USBmemories. If I find nice searching engine or brilliant document that can be used in the future, I just have to put links to my e-portfolio.

4. What skills and understandings have you learned from creating your e-Portfolio that may promote your development as an effective learner in the digital age?

There are a lot of skills I learned in this lesson, and the most biggest skill is the literacy in English used in the computing world. Before I took this course, only I knew "drag" and "paste" .
However, now that I start building up my own e-portfolio with FF which has got many function accompanied with English version of "Add-ons", I came to understand what the instruction says.
In addition, I came to understand that there is always a way to accomplish a thing in the digital world. Even if you find it difficult to upload your works in the docx. format, you can change that into PDF and even if you do not own server, you can have "free" file space such as Google document. It is great that if you keep on searching on the Internet, there always someone to help. Of course, paying attention to the fast evolution of digital world is necessary because nothing stays as it is now and anything disabled become something abled.
